Is it strictly necessary to use the paper lining stuff or if I just butter the tin will that suffice

I butter the tin and it works fine. Some people recommend buttering and then coating with breadcrumbs.

Butter then a light dusting of four, the flour stops the butter soaking into the cake and making it greasy.

I have made my own greaseproof paper before ( husband is from Sri Lanka where they didn't have it so had to make their own) I just get plain a4 sheet of paper, cut it to size then butter both sides of the paper Smile
