Definitely milk.
It's horrible with water. Sticky and stodgy.

DD has it with water & brown sugar or blueberries

She says the brown sugar tastes like flapjack

treedelivery · 22/04/2012 18:11

Water?

I think I am plunging the family into virtue if I make it with semi-skimmed! Make it with half gold top and half cream.

Droooool.

Ugh123 · 22/04/2012 18:13

We have about 1/4 milk to 1/3 milk and the topped up with water. (And bananas, raisins and maple syrup...yum)

mumbaisapphire · 22/04/2012 18:15

Half & half. I use quick oats in the microwave. Packet instructions call for 1/3rd of a cup of oats and then 2/3rds of a cup of water, but I make it with 1/3 water and 1/3 semi skim milk. I add honey to sweeten and it still feels just as luxurious...ok so maybe not as luxurious as it would with full fat milk and cream, but it's pleasant enough. Not sure I could do all water.

We've been eating porridge for breakfast every day since ds1 was weaned 9 years ago!! We all love it (with milk, it's awful with water). We have it plain or with cinnamon, banana, raisins, blueberries, strawberries, prunes, agave syrup, demerara sugar (not all at the same time obviously).

dwpanxt · 22/04/2012 18:22

I cant stand porridge made with milk.

I make mine with water -pre-boiled and poured over the dry oats in a large bowl. I dont stir too much as that makes it gooey. I put the bowl into a microwave for 90 seconds and leave to cool.

Then I put cold semi skimmed milk on. I then add salt -never sugar.

Follyfoot · 22/04/2012 18:23

Mix of milk and water, and only one sort of oats will do for me (how sad is that?)...

Normally have it with a little blob of St Dalfour fruit spread, but love it with bananas and maple syrup or tinned breakfast apricots. Yum.

AllPastYears · 22/04/2012 18:25

Milk all the way. Made with water it tastes like wallpaper paste!

TheReturnOfStropperella · 22/04/2012 18:25

I eat porridge made with water, but add fruit, seeds and natural yoghurt. Although I can also do the plain porridge with salt thing with a little splash of milk. Porridge + sugar = yuk, imo.

sherocks · 22/04/2012 18:28

Ok so only water on porridge is a no-no...thank you for that ! I'm French so I have only just discover porridge and I don't know how I lived without it !!!
Its such a confort food as well when the weather is miserable outside !

Ah, porridge with water and salt. My scottish grandmother would be proud of me. Except I make it with milk and nutella :o

AWimbaWay · 22/04/2012 18:32

Follyfoot, I will only eat one brand of oats too, wonder if it's the same one?

I do half and half, I like my porridge quite smooth, no hard oaty bits and find adding a bit of water helps get the consistency I like.

LetsKateWin · 22/04/2012 18:35

I like milk and syrup with mine.

I don't really have a sweet tooth, but it's a great combo.

sherocks · 22/04/2012 18:36

Porridge with milk and nutella ??? Wow.....Smile

Porridge made with water and salt. Served with trickle of milk and some form of sugar

walkonthebeach · 22/04/2012 18:43

Porridge with water, then a tablespoon of single cream and syrup.

LemonTurd · 22/04/2012 18:46

Milk. With a dollop of creme fraiche, berries and manuka honey.

Water and salt makes me think of the Workhouse. It's too depressing to even consider.

bagelmonkey · 22/04/2012 18:53

I hate milk, so I have mine with water and a load of cinnamon & Sultanas (& sometimes a bit of sugar)
Everyone else in my family has it with milk.
My Mum & Dad soak the oats the night before, but I just microwave them.

Iggly · 22/04/2012 19:20

Make with water then add milk at the end. Add sugar.

MagsAloof · 22/04/2012 19:24

I prefer it with milk and lashings of golden syrup but mostly I try to be healthy so do 50/50 milk-water (pure water is minging) with banana, blueberries, flaked almonds, cinnamon & honey (delish).

HillyWallaby · 22/04/2012 19:29

I usually make mine with half water half milk, but then I add cold milk to the bowl of hot porridge and it makes a sort of porridge floating island. Confused don't know why I do this, except my mum and GPs always did it so I have just continued. It is essential to have lots of either soft brown sugar, or golden syrup on top. Which is why I try not to have it very often!

PinkChampagneandStrawberries · 22/04/2012 19:30

I don't eat it but I use milk when making it for Dp/Ds

mirry2 · 22/04/2012 19:31

Made with water and a 1/4teaspoon sprinkled on it in my bowl, just to take away the gluey taste.
