My bread rolls are too crusty; how do you make soft 'burger' rolls

I use
1.5 lbs flour
1 packet of yeast
1oz fat
1 tspn salt
1 tspn sugar

& they are lovely but crusty

Any ideas to make them softer?

don't preheat the oven.

you could also try putting a tray of water in the oven while they cook.

once they're cool, bag them

You could either brush them with milk and then sprinkle flour over them, then put them in the oven with a tray of water as Yesterday suggests, but brushing them with a beaten egg also gives them a soft chewy crust and helps keeps the bread soft too.

I cover the tops with flour and then wrap them in a tea towel when they come out of the oven.

Lots of different advise for me to try - thanks

I'll have to give the ones with milk a miss as someone is lactose intolerant and someone else is dairy free

But I'll have a play
