On a jar of tomato coulis (tomato puree, salt) it says: once opened, keep in the frdge for maximum of 3 days Hmm

Absolutely need it for stew. Opened 5-7 days ago. Smells fine.

I can use it, yes?

I would. Sniff it, taste it. If its seems ok it almost certainly is. It's going to be heated anyway.

lisaneedsarest · 27/03/2012 17:18

I would!

As long as it isn't actually fizzing/smelling weird, go for it.

sharond101 · 27/03/2012 23:02

I'd use it. My pesto jar says use within three days. It's been open in my fridge and dipped into for recipes for the last 3 months without ill effect or bad tastes.

I used it, tasted fine and we're still alive.

It's all bullshit, isn't it? How can pesto go off in 3 days? Ploy to make you buy more.

It's a best before date, not a use by date, so use your judgement - I'd say you're absolutely fine to eat it Smile

I would have done the same - if it looks and smells OK, it probably is OK. Especially for something you're going to boil in a stew, I would think that would kill anything nasty!
