How long does meat from the butcher last in the fridge?

I went to the butchers on Tues and bought some lamb and lambs' kidneys to make a hotpot. I didn't get around to cooking it when I expected and was thinking of making it now. I never thought to ask the butcher for a use by date for the meat. We typically use stuff within couple of days or freeze it but would you generally expect uncoiled meat to last 5 days in the fridge ok.

Definitely not the kidneys.

Sorry, I typed that on my daft phone. 'uncooked' meat not 'uncoiled' meat and there should be a ? too.

I would.

Does it look/smell ok?

That's what people had to rely on before use by dates, and seems an eminently more sensible way of seeing if food is still edible anyway (to me) Smile

Ah, not the kidneys. They are kind of stinky. Not in a rotten way but in a v meaty way. I've never cooked kidney before so I wasn't sure if that's how they always are. I'll chuck them this time then. Sad

To be fair, no-one should ever eat kidney or liver on account of the fact they taste fucking grim.

Really? This was a new thing for me. Maybe I've been saved then.
