Out of date chilli sauce would you eat it?

I popped to my mums and borrowed a jar of homepride chilli sauce (brown the mince then pour the sauce on type of stuff) and have just noticed the use by date was December 2004!!! My mum says tinned stuff is fine forever but I'm fairly unsure...would you use it???

Bloody hell, I clicked on this thinking it would be a few months out of date, not 8 years! Bin it.

Hassled · 19/03/2012 17:26

No. I usually laugh in the face of sell by dates but this is a devil-may-care attitude gone too far. Bin it.

Yeah, I'm very relaxed when it comes to Best Before dates but I'm not sure that even I would risk something 8 years old!

Has the button on the lid popped up? If so, definately chuck.

sandyballs · 19/03/2012 17:28

It probably pre-dates popping lids Grin

I nearly always say yes to the "would you eat it?" questions.

I wouldn't use homepride chilli sauce anyway though - I thought you were going to be talking about tasty red/orange spicy vinegary chilli sauce.

If it's "use by" then you should definitely bin. If it's "best before" and the top hasn't popped up then Blush I probably would Blush because I'm dead Eco-friendly.

Ummm...normally I have a complete disregard for best before dates but even I'd have to give careful consideration to something 8 years out of date. That said, I'd open it and sniff it and eve if it seemed ok, then I'd probably still bin it. One, because those cook-in sauces are always minging and; two, because anything that is so well preserved that it's ok 8 years past it's sell-by date must be so full of crap that it cannot be good for you.

Curlybrunette · 19/03/2012 17:59

Well the lid hasn't popped but I was feeling pretty dubious about it. Bin it is! Thanks guys, you may saved our lives (or saved us from a minging meal...)

No, we had 2010 tinned tomatoes last week and they were fine, but I wouldn't trust the seal on a jar that long.
