HFW's veg byriani - tea towel in the oven... really???!

The recipe says to cover with tea towel and lid and put in the oven....

Surely a close fitting casserole lid will suffice?!?!?

Has anyone actually put a tea towel in their oven and had it survive to tell the tale?!

this rings a bell with me, but I've never tried it with a tea towel.

I've done a recipe years ago, that sealed the pot with some dough - just flour and water.

You could try soaking the tea towel first to make sure it doesn't sizzle?

He does say a damp tea towel but I think I'd have to stand next to the oven the whole cooking time! Admittedly it is 160 only for 20 minutes so suspect accident unlikely but I'm still not sure! Confused

Nothing will hppen to a damp teatowel in an oven at 160 for 20 minutes. Give it a go. Check on it after ten minutes if you are really worried.

Cool, I will have a go! Just never put a tea towel in the oven before.... I am sure it will be fine. Seems odd to me though!

Thx.

hope it was OK - am cooking that biryani on Saturday...

It was nice, though I would ramp up the chilli and spice factor a bit when I next do it.. Dead tasty though.

Tea towel did not self combust!

Been doing this for years, I have a biryani tea towel kept only for this purpose no fires in 12 years.
