Is there a Mumsnet Definitive Guide to what to cook for the school bake sale?

Surely there should be?

  • Easy to make / quick to make
  • Cheap enough that it's not galling when they sell it for 10p a piece
  • Popular (brown things don't sell unless chocolate)
  • Easy to transport
  • Doesn't need to be made last minute (but can be).

What do you usually send?

There was a good thread on this a while back, have you searched?

I do either...
rice krispie cakes (with value chocolate)
Mini gingerbread people
Fairy cakes with a choc button or dolly mix on top

I would do an all in one chocolate tray bake cake. Easy.

I do:
muffins (white belgian choc and raspberry as I have raspberries from allotment in freezer, for adults and choc chip or double choc chip for kids) as are quick, easy to do last minute and impressive.

Brownies, always popular and again easy to do last minute and portion
traybakes - choc with some fudgy gooey icing or lemon drizzle as easy to do and portion.
As I do them so come out of oven just in time for sale, they are usually still warm and smell fab. Usually sold before they hit the table! Grin

Our cakes are sold at 25p each or slice. 10p is for the leftovers at the end! Shock

Thanks for the ideas and links.

This time I'm supposed to be doing something with an English theme. Thinking maybe Bakewell cupcakes?

Butterfly cakes don't sell, nor do plain cupcakes with no icing. Basically anything with icing sells very well, especially with sprinkles on the top. White, yellow and pink icing tend to go well, green and blue not so much.
