how do i prepare fennel? what bits should i cut off?

found a recipe for pan fried fennel (veg box day yesterday!)... but not sure how to cut it up! lol

recipe says slice it thinly... which is fine. but what bits need to be discarded? the bits sticking out the top? do i need to cut the stalky bit out of the middle?

I think I chopped off the bits sticking out the top and sliced the rest (including the stalky bit but not including the brown bottom bit) - I sort of treated it like an onion once the stalky bits had gone! hth
