Am making marmalade RIGHT NOW. Never done anything like jam before- but saw a basket of oranges for £3 in Adsa and got suckered in...

They are in a big pot simmering for 3hrs, will be done at 8.

Will update as I go along for other marmalade virgins.

There seem to be a lot of steps that I need to do and I dont have any 'muslin'- will an old clean baby muslin thing be ok you think?

Ah, let me know what method you use Mrs- whole orangey thing too?

I want to make more, but no more jars. How long does seville orange season last?

Glitter well done, glad that you are pleased with end result. I had to laugh when you said about throwing away the poaching liquid, as I did the very same when I used the recipe in Jan 2010. It's not clear is it? Except that I didn't realise, so didn't add any more liquid, so ended up with some very bricky marmelade (ie set like a brick).

The batch I made in 2011 was not much better - boiled it too hard and fast so reached setting point too soon, so set almost solid by the time I had attended to it.

Like you, I started 2012 batch on Friday night, finished yesterday, and touch wood am v pleased with result.

Recipe given to me by MIL, who had also videoed DElia in 1980s demonstrating the recipe. MIL had a stroke in 2010 and no longer up to marmelade making (at the mo anyway) and so passed video to me earlier this year, so I did feel obliged to have 3rd attempt. Now glad I did!

Think Sevile orange season is Jan/early Feb only.
