No-one actually bothers with unsalted butter do they?

I like to eat salted butter.

So that's what I have in the house.

Why would I buy another kind of butter that, if I were to fancy a slice of toast, it would be no good?

Buttercream.

fuckityfuckfuckfuck · 02/02/2012 18:10

It's for baking with

MrsBovary · 02/02/2012 18:10

Yes buttercream, and some cakes. Otherwise agree.

AuntingCarse · 02/02/2012 18:11

I do. Love it on crackers, but use it for all my baking as well.

BellaBearisWideAwake · 02/02/2012 18:11

I prefer it.

jade80 · 02/02/2012 18:12

I don't often buy it, but I do quite like it on toast occasionally, quite like the taste!

LydiaWickham · 02/02/2012 18:13

better for baking, and I've not bothered to have a second type in the house, I don't miss the salt on toast. I do wonder why anyone bothers with the salted kind, why not buy one type and if you need to, add salt?

deaconblue · 02/02/2012 18:14

I buy salted for eating and unsalted for baking

MrsCampbellBlack · 02/02/2012 18:14

I much prefer president unsalted to the salted kind but try to keep salt to a minimum really.

Flibbertyjibbet · 02/02/2012 18:16

I prefer unsalted. I used to buy both - salted for crackers and sandwiches, unsalted for baking and buttercream. Then i must have run out of salted and had some cheese on crackers with unsalted butter, and found I preferred it.

PrisonerOfWaugh · 02/02/2012 18:17

Unsalted because I'm conscious of the salt levels in the kids food. Not that we use huge amounts anyway

AlmaMartyr · 02/02/2012 18:19

I only buy unsalted since I mostly use butter for baking and I don't really like anything salty.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 02/02/2012 18:20

I do, I don't like salty cakes.

HillyWallaby · 02/02/2012 18:22

Loads of recipes state unsalted butter, even savoury ones (I think it has something to do with the stability when heated to high temperatures) but unsalted butter when given to spread on bread is one of life's great disappointments.

Even sweet things like butter cream are better IMHO of that tiny bit of salt.

ivykaty44 · 02/02/2012 18:22

I prefer the taste and buy unsalted all the time. Why would I purchase something that I don't like as much when I can have the butter I really like the taste?

That would be wrong which ever way around the purchase.

Ephiny · 02/02/2012 18:22

I use unsalted for baking, and a salted/spreadable one to go on bread etc.

randommoment · 02/02/2012 18:24

Have just eaten DD2's school cookery lesson cake, made with chocolate buttercream, only had ordinary butter this morning so that's what she took, and it's gorgeous. Although I would say that about my darling DD wouldn't I!

HillyWallaby · 02/02/2012 18:24

You can all relax about the salt levels. Salt is fine. We need salt. If your diet is really too high in salt then the amount in slightly salted butter is really niether here not there.

MrsCampbellBlack · 02/02/2012 18:48

Well for some of us cutting down on salt is pretty important so easy things like using unsalted rather salted butter is just a very simple thing to do. Also as I said - I prefer the taste.

MonsterBookOfTysons · 02/02/2012 18:52

I use unsalted butter for baking with and I use salted anchor for everything else :o

PrisonerOfWaugh · 02/02/2012 18:52

Of course we need salt, but given our western diet it is actually pretty hard to avoid.

It is easy for the kids to get too much salt, as it is in so many staples - just a couple of slices of bread is most of their daily allowance - add salted butter to that, not even thinking about cheese etc.

duchesse · 02/02/2012 18:54

We do. Bother with it I mean. It's lovely. The children always nag me to buy salted but I never do. Mwhahahahaha.

SpringHeeledJack · 02/02/2012 18:56

I use it

but then I am a miserable puritan. Not enough to use marge, though

when I have salted butter, it tastes like fucking marmite by comparison and is of course delicious

Bunbaker · 02/02/2012 18:57

I find unsalted butter makes buttercream too sickly. I use salted for baking as well. Shortbread made with unsalted butter is a bit tasteless.

For bread and toast I use Lurpak slightly salted spreadable. MIL buys salted butter and when we stay with her I now find salted butter on bread or toast too salty.

AnyoneButLulu · 02/02/2012 18:57

Got into the habit when cooking for babies, never went back to salted. Given that we all like eating bread them we've got very little room in our diets for any more salt.
