yes high in fat but oh so good for you!

geekgrrl · 19/01/2006 11:09

ooh yes they are. and they aren't that good for you, the fat is just monounsaturated. neither good nor bad.

noddyholder · 19/01/2006 11:14

Oh sh**! I have been shovelling them in no wonder I haven't lost much!

They are very high in fat (ISTR that half an avocado used to be more than your entire Weight Watchers fat allowance for a day back when they counted stuff that way). Just googled and found that they vary from 10g (not so bad) to 40g (urk!) fat per 100g. And unfortunately the nicer they taste the higher the fat content, probably. It is mostly monounsaturated fat, though.

No need to cut them out altogether (because they are very good for you), but you might want to cut down a bit if you've been eating them a lot.

I am still waiting to hear the answer I really want to hear

They are not fattening in the least, they are very very good for you, if you keep eating them you will end up as slim as a pin. Is that the right answer Noddyholder?

One easy way you can tell how fatty they are - if you make guacomole by hand, your hands get all nice and moist from the oil.

paolosgirl · 19/01/2006 13:04

No, in moderation, as with most things - high in the right kind of fat, and we need do good fats in our diet.

When I was diagnosed as 'quasi' anorexic I was put on a diet of avocados (together with prawns and brown ale)! Sorry, yes, they are fattening but what the hell!

jangly · 19/01/2006 13:10

Monounsaturated fat is good for you. So, eat the avacado and keep low fat for the rest of the day! see here

avocado oil is rich in anti - toxicants

paolosgirl · 19/01/2006 13:14

I think it's antioxidants

Kelly1978 · 19/01/2006 13:16
