They are cleaner than Waitrose in Spain

puff · 17/01/2006 14:00

ooh, didn't know Waitrose was in Spain!

hmm, that didn't translate into typed word very well. I mean that Lidl stores in Spain are cleaner than Waitrose stores here.
(Yorkshire lass, frugal with words)

PS Lidl clean here in Donny, but Netto is filthy!

Lidl is in our old Waitrose site (it relocated to a purpose built store a few years back). Somehow it manages to make what was already a grotty Waitrose look worse ! Probably all the tall wire grills to stop potential shoppers escaping don't help. The stuff is piled so high and I wonder if they really get the turnover to keep it fresh. Always queues in there although yet to get a bargain myself. Mind you, I also don't think that the local Morrisons is a patch on the old Safeway store, but they are well regarded up North according to my mum !.

FrayedKnot · 17/01/2006 14:31

Our LIDL is fine. And usually empty.

As a bona fide northerner (now living in Norfolk) I can confirm that Morrisons are pants. They seem to be popular up north though. I hated them when I lived up north and now they have tracked me down to Diss and taken away my lovely Safeway.

DaddyCool · 17/01/2006 14:54

I went to a LIDL at lunch today and it smelled of poo.

Misspiggy · 17/01/2006 14:59

I don't know if it's because the store only opened a couple of months ago but our local Lidl is spotless (much better than the manky Somerfield across the road from it).

Turquoise · 17/01/2006 15:02

What is it with Lidl on this website atm? The Boden/Primark obsessions I could understand, because that's about clothes.
However, Matalan and TK Maxx also reek of poo.

expatinscotland · 17/01/2006 15:06

The SouthEast is a filthy place. Eeewwww.

meggmoo · 17/01/2006 15:09

Ours (in the SE) is spotless, it's the people inside that smell of poo and wee, not me of course, I smell of gardenias and rose petals.

katzg · 17/01/2006 15:42

i hate morrisons - ours is a knightmare with all the 'market' stalls everwhere, and open freezers with half defrosted food in them!

Lidls is busy but clean - agree about how high stuff is stacked and Netto is just plain rank! i really wouldn't be suprised to spot something nasty scuttling round the one near me!

Prettybird · 17/01/2006 15:50

Don't get me started about Morrisons! I used to be a loyal Safeway shopper, but stopped when it went downhill as Morrisons. I was already doing part of my shopping at Lidl and I was damned if I was going to go to three supermarkets to get enverything I wwanted. So I now shop weekly in Lidl and with a fortnightly top-up at Sainsbury's.

Our local Lidl (south side of Glasgow) is always spotless with friendly staff and excellent service - but my Mum complains of poor service at her local Lidl on the north side of Glasgow. I suppose with only a few staff, it really does come down to the quality of the store amanger and the ethos he/she generates.

noddyholder · 17/01/2006 15:50

Maybe loads of people farting in there from the cheap food?

Smurfgirl · 17/01/2006 18:34

Our Lidl, Aldi and Netto (Hull) are all spotless. I went to all three today

VeniVidiVickiQV · 17/01/2006 18:36

Alledgedly, they dont like spending money on hygiene down south...........

VeniVidiVickiQV · 17/01/2006 18:37

said retailer that is.....

intergalacticwalrus · 17/01/2006 18:41

We don't have a Lidl in Bath you know. We are far to upmarket.

So I have to drive incognito to Bristol to get my bargain Albanian fish fingers for DP

TwoIfBySea · 17/01/2006 21:35

I quite like Morrisons, detest Tesco towers though, they are always manky.

My nearest Lidl, in Bathgate, is where I go when reserves are running low, such as January and it is spotless as well as the staff being really friendly. But I did see two druggies nick some bedding right in front of me and another woman the other week. Very brazen too. The manager went after them as they had been in earlier and nicked some other stuff.
