Vegetarian craving steak - but other iron rich foods not appealing. Any ideas?

I really want a steak. It's the only thing I can think of to stop me feeling so sick.

I am about 30 weeks pregnant.

Thing is, when I go through other iron rich foods, nothing particularly appeals. Is there something else in steak that I might be lacking? Something else I could eat to satisfy the steak craving.

Mmmmmmm dead cow. I've been vegetarian for over 20 years so I'm surprised my body would even know what steak is.

I lived on Steak and Onion or Roast beef flavour crisps when I was pregnant! All I can think of is that fried haloumi or paneer might give you 'something to chew on' in the way that steak would.

Maybe lentil dhal with paneer? But if you're anything like I was, the idea of a curry is hideous to you.

Haloumi in a baguette with spinach salad?

Aside from iron, beef is a very good source of B vitamins (especially B12) and zinc. B12 is notoriously difficult to get from plant sources. You could try sea vegetables and yeast extracts. Supplements might help. Otherwise, unless you have some serious moral objection, a piece of beef might do the trick. :)

Drink/eat lots of vitamin c rich food, it helps the body to absorb iron. I nearly turned orange during my pregnancy due to my juice cravings Smile which I always assumed were due to being vegetarian.

Your body is telling you something! Anyway, dead cow is better than live things (like oysters or witchety grubs) isn't it?

Funnily enough cogito, without knowing any of that the only things I have fely like nibbling on are seaweed or marmite toast. B12 it might be then? Aren't our bodies clever?

Was just coming back to say Marmite!

Soy beans in naturally fermented soy sauce? With chilli and salt and garlic now post-partum!
I love marmite and these tend to have the je ne sais quoi about them too.

If you want it, have it :)

We could do a Joey-Phoebe pact if you want (but only for a day!) You have a steak tomorrow and I won't eat any meat at all. :)
