Why are my sponge fingers floating? A sherry trifle query...

So I put my sponge fingers in my trifle bowl, glugged on some sherry, let them soak. Then I got my jelly mix (dissolved cubes, if that makes a difference) and poured it on... and all my fingers floated to the top! At which point I thought sod it, and chucked another glug of sherry in for good luck. What did I do wrong? All other trifles I've had have their sponges at the bottom!

I soak the sponge fingers in booze then put canned fruit cocktail stuff over the top to weigh the sponge fingers down, then pour jelly over the top. Once jelly is set add custard, then cream before finishing off with grated chocolate or a cherry on top.

too much jelly! You have to use just a little to avoid the floating, or more fingers.
Sponge cake would be better as they absorb more.
But it'll still taste good.

Aha! Thank you. I will try sponge cake and less jelly for the next one, plus fruit. It tasted fine, just wasn't exactly presentable-for-guests trifle. Which was fine as it was a practice one!
