What can I top fairy cakes with other than icing sugar or cream cheese

Just made fairy cakes to take to a party tomorrow. What can I put on top? I've run out of icing sugar and don't like cream cheese.

Chocolate buttons popped on top of slightly warm cakes make a nice melted puddle.

There was someone on here yesterday with a recipe for bacon jam. Grin

dwpanxt · 25/11/2011 20:52

Or make butterfly cakes with a blob of jam instead of buttercream

Cocoa powder? Cut out a star shape or similar in paper, dust powder over in a sieve and make a pretty shape.

Choc fudge icing - requires sugar, cream/ condensed milk, plain choc, vanilla.

Condensed caramel and a slice if banana for a banoffee pie element?

Fudge Icing

Ingredients

100g plain chocolate, finely chopped

1 tablespoon golden syrup

25g unsalted butter at room temperature

Melt the chocolate in a heatproof bowl over a pan of simmering water. When gently melted and smooth add the golden syrup and butter. When it's all melted and smooth, let the mixture cool and stir occasionally. When you think it is a good consistency for spreading, use before the mixture sets (if it does, very gently warm).

This is enough to fill and top one sponge cake, or top 12 cupcakes/fairy cakes with the fudge icing mixture.

...or bear in mind that icing sugar is only powdered sugar... you can just put regular granulated sugar in the blender on high for a few minutes to make it powdery!

Oh all lovely thank you. X

I just melt dark or white chocolate and pour a splodge on the top - you can then pop a sweet on the top but chocolate on its own is great
