Slightly burned Xmas cake - chop burnt bits off now or later?

Christmas cake is slightly burned but only on the top and not too badly. I plan to slice the top off anyway, to get a neat finish for the icing, and I thought it best to do that at the last minute, to stop the cake drying out. BUT, if I'm feeding the cake, will the alcohol soak through the burned layer into the rest of the cake, or will the alcohol stay near the top and I'll just be chopping off the alcohol-soaked bit? Not sure if that makes sense... basically, shall I cut off the burned bit now or just before icing?!

cut it off now and turn cake upside down, bottom will be nice and flat for icing. If you are feeding cake, wrap it up after each feed and it will not dry out.
