What can I use instead? What would happen if I just blobbed bits of mixture on a greased baking tray?

just grease the holes in the tin

Do a tray bake instead, cut it into small squares and decorate (Mary Berry traybakes are brilliant and I am not a great baker).

With the same mix for traybake?

Don't want to grease holes though good idea as got several batches and don't want to have to cool it down between each batch

Have you got baking paper? If so you can cut squares and poke them in the holes and voila cafe style cases-sort of.
