have no idea how it is going to turn out but could never be bothered to make it on the stove and my microwave porridge either boiled over or didn't taste that fantastic so I thought I would give this a go! My 21 month old dd loves porridge too! It is on a timer switch and should start at about 2.45am to be ready for 6.45am so fingers crossed!

Get a decent sized glass jug. I have a 2 pint one, microwave porridge for 2 mins, then stir, then one min and stir, and repeat. Microwave has to be easier than washing up a slow cooker! Surely? I am a microwave porridge convert.

You're cooking porridge for four hours?? It takes five mins max.

splatapus your response made me laugh, yes give it a go, it worked! The porridge was the perfect consistancy and the oats nice and tender and properly cooked which I never seemed to be able to achieve in the microwave. It was so nice to get out of bed and not have to actually do anything other than add a splash of milk, a squeeze of honey and mash a banana. :)
nickschick what size slow cooker do you have and how long did you cook it for? I have read that the size of the cooker can make a difference, small quantities don't work so well in larger ones, it dries it out too much and sticks! My cooker is only 1.5ltrs, tiny, the smallest you can buy I think.
weevilswobble the wash up was no different to washing up a 2 pint jug.
birdsofshoreandsea we have an electric stove top (sigh) so it never took me 3 minutes on the top of the stove!

Easy method for perfect porridge that doesn't rack up your electricity bill ...... Combine rolled oats with water, splash of milk and pinch of salt in a saucepan. Bring to the boil and stir well. Turn off the heat, pop on a lid and leave overnight. Next morning reheat and stir.

Sounds a bit a perfect breeding ground for bacteria though cogito.

I made it in the slow cooker once-smelt lovely, tasted like shit, I think I cooked it for too long and my slow cooker is massive.

I make mine in a 3ltr slowcooker.

2 cups of oats, 4 cups of water, 2 cups of milk.

Sometimes i add dried fruit, depends. I like it with a squeeze of honey.

It can be left overnight in the fridge. Milk and oats don't generate that many bugs.... not like warm meat, for example. Any bacteria is destroyed when the porrdige is reheated in the morning.

You didn't say you put it in the fridge, I had this image of it sitting on the hob all warm and festering.

deemented how long do you cook yours for? I want to try milk with mine too, but am nervous about it being left to stand before the timer kicks in and the milk turning sour!

No-one's died yet. And haven't woken up to a pan of oaty-yoghurt either... Really, use your slow-cooker for things that actually need cooking. Porridge oats are already edible and only need to heat up and absorb the liquid. It's not cooking, really.

Put 1/2 cup porridge oats in non-stick pan. Cover with 1 cup water. Put on hob for 5 mins. Stir once it starts making pffft pffft noises, add spoon of syrup. Eat.

(leave pan until porridge residue crusts and dries - about 10 mins - then tip out.)

So I tried oatmeal in the slow cooker instead of rolled oats last night, wow sooooooooooo creamy and lovely!!! Amazing! Never using rolled oats again + they're healthier too!
