Pressure canning for preserving applesauce and tomato sauce and the like

I'd like to start doing some serious preserves. Well, not so serious but maybe I'm going to need to invest in some serious equipment like a pressure canner? I've been trying to do some research online but it all seems to be based in the US. Do we even have pressure canners here? Apparently they are not the same as pressure cookers, but not exactly sure why as I've never used either.

Does anyone have any experience with this or no where to start?
