Ham in Coke - do you need to use Nice Ham

Tried this last night, but not having followed a recipe, I'm not sure I did it right.......

Used plastic ham (reformed), shoved it in the slow cooker and poured over 3 x cans of full fat Coke. It didn't fully cover the ham for a start Grin, and then half way through I realised that the ham still had some plastic round it Grin.

It was ok, but didn't really taste any different to a normal boiled ham.

Tried it. Complete waste of time. As you say, tastes like ham!

CaptainNancy · 29/07/2011 13:06

What recipe are you using?

I think you're meant to use a joint of ham not sliced though... and I'm sure there are other ingredients. Nigella has a recipe, but I've never made it...

ManiPedi · 29/07/2011 13:35

No recipe Grin.

Perhaps that was my downfall?

Just heard people talking about it on here so thought I'd "give it a go".

It was a joint of ham of sorts...but it was reformed IYSWIM.

Yuk, yuk, yuk! Grin

Recipe is for a joint of 'proper' ham - not something reformed, sliced or with plastic around it.

(Having said all of that, I cooked it once and hated it. Although I seem to be a definite minority!)

Here's Nigella's recipe

Hmm

I do the ham in ginger ale recipe using a gammon joint from the farm shop and ginger beer. It is yummy. I'm not sure that it would work with reformed ham though! You don't have to cover the ham BTW as a lot of juices come out from the meat and your slow cooker would overflow.

BecauseImWorthIt · 29/07/2011 13:39

BTW - you also use raw ham, not already cooked ham.

ManiPedi · 29/07/2011 13:41

It was like this.

yy it was raw ham, don't worry I'm not that culinary challenged!

Grin Trust me- without a recipe, tht's the knod of mistake I would have made...

Oh we made Nigella's gammon in cherry coke for a family party last weekend and I really enjoyed it. Perhaps cherry coke has more flavour. Anyway, I don't normally like gammon due to the saltiness, but the cherry coke took that away and I did notice a slight difference in the taste.

You have to use proper coca cola.
I find that it gives my ham a fab flavour.
