Thought I'd remind you all as it's a big deal for us!!!
....Although I always forget on the day and my parents kindly remind me, so I rush out and buy a couple of bottles.
Their verdict this year is it's quite pleasant, with no weird flavours such as banana.
well, will find out tonight

Thanks for the reminder Frenchgirl. I am a big fan of "lighter" red wines such as Gamay de Touraine and Beaujolais (mmmm, Julienas), but haven't had Nouveau for years because of its poor reputation of late. I might bag a bottle on my way home tonight

Frenchgirl · 17/11/2005 13:51

mmm
I expect everybody's gone out in a panic to buy their bottle

or

noone actually cares part from me

is it old fashioned or weird to buy beaujolais nouveau in this country??

So long as I don't get too many banana and bubblegum notes I will be a happy quaffer.
Anyone else care to join the Mumsnet Beaujolais Nouveau virtual wine-tasting tonight?

I don't do fashion, only class and elegance

It had the reputation for some years as being rather a naff thing to do...some of the blingier City wine bars used to have slightly forced races to get their bottles in first, then you'd see footage of a lot of twats in red braces swigging away...then word got out that the quality had also gone way downhill and that was it really. I have not been aware of it hitting the wine merchants here for years, although Waitrose (for example) always has an excellent Julienas/Brouilly/Moulin a Vent choice of "proper" Beaujolais and B-Villages...

Marina · 17/11/2005 13:58

exactly cod. It was all a bit Capital City...

sandyballs · 17/11/2005 13:59

Oh is it today then, I was thinking about that earlier, being November, then just saw this . It's a kind of tradition that I buy my FIL a couple of bottles and I'm late every year so he'll be impressed this evening. Thanks.

Frenchgirl · 17/11/2005 14:01

well you see in my family we've always had a bottle of beaujolais nouveau to see how crap it is on the day it comes out, then if we want good beaujolais we have Julienas for instance.

oh good sandyballs, aren't you kind to your FIL!!

Ask Messrs Oddbins who were clanging the shutter down at my branch when I got there
Am off on a day-trip on Monday, will get some there and report back next week...unless you tell me it was really degueulasse

Frenchgirl · 18/11/2005 12:36

Not deguelasse, pleasantly light, no funny flavours, get a couple of bottles I'd say (no more though, that would be wasting money!!). Didn't have a particularly thorough tasting though so might do that tonight
