Beef strogonoff with creme fraiche?

This is a bit embarrassing! DH got some discounted frying steak and as we have loads of mushrooms, I thought, "great, I can make a strogonoff with the packet I have in the cupboard." The packet was out of date in June last year Blush.

Does anyone have a strogonoff recipe that I cna adapt, as I only have creme fraiche in the fridge? TIA.

What about this?

Onions, mushrooms, steak and the creme fraiche. Serve it on pasta.

Ive used creme fraiche before in stroganoff. Works well.

Delia - I assume you have porcini mushrooms in the cupboard - NOT! Will be fine without them.

Coat the steak strips in flour seasoned with paprika, salt and pepper. Fry in butter or oil with onion until soft. Add mushrooms and fry for a few more mins.

Lower heat and stir in a spoonful of mustard with a tub of creme fraiche and cook for a minute or so, without allowing it to boil. Then add some lemon juice to taste and serve.

Use french mustard

Thanks all! Am looking forward to it now, can even pretend that creme fraiche was the plan all along. I mean, who uses packet sauce mixes?!

Tribpot - why would the woman who has a year old packet sauce in her cupboard not reliably have porcini mushrooms as a larder staple?!! Grin

Creme fraiche or soured cream is not unusual to use
