Recommendations for good red and white wine under fiver for a wedding

Title kind of says it all but my sister is getting married this summer and I said I would try and help her find some nice cheap good value wine for the reception. They are having alot of people and would prefer save some ££ on wine.
NB they are open to any region / grape if people are looking for more details!

Anyone tried any good wine at this price range or currently on offer with Majestic or big supermarkets?

Promise to toast all those who have made good reccos and if needed, this is a good excuse for you to altruistically have a tasting session.

Lidl have a fantastic range of NHB (Not Half Bad) wines! It really depends on the food being served as to which ones to buy, so maybe go and buy a few, see which ones you like. The South African Chenin Blanc and the South American Pinot Noir might be a good start (can't remeber exactly what they are called)

One word of advice, stay away from the German Pino Grigio . This has been the only one I've not been able to drink

Easy drinking red

QuintessentialPains · 09/05/2011 13:44

For red, I dont think you can go wrong with a Merlot, it is so mellow.

Look, Jp Chenet, multi saver deal at Drinks Direct

We got our wedding wine from Majestic Calais. If you spend over £400 they pay for your ferry crossing to go and collect it!

We bought all our wine (Cono Sur Pinot Noir and Farleigh Estate Sauvignon Blanc), the sparkling wine for the toasts (it was a NZ wine with a slight pink tint) and Pimms for welcome drinks.

KnottyLocks · 09/05/2011 14:01

This is lovely and a bargain

karmakameleon · 09/05/2011 14:06

We went to Majestic, told them what we were looking for and they recommended three reds and three whites to try and a pink sparkling wine from NZ instead of champagne. All great value and the woman managed to talk DH down from the more expensive wines to some much cheaper options (mostly from Chile).

Once we had decided which ones we preferred, DH drove down to Calais to pick them up. All worked out very cost effective.

KnottyLocks · 09/05/2011 14:07

This is very cheap for Lindemans

KnottyLocks · 09/05/2011 14:11

This is making me thirsty. Grin

This is the sparkling wine we had for the toasts - currently £4.99 per bottle with Majestic Calais.

This is the red we had - £3.99 per bottle if you buy two or £5.99 for 1 bottle.

This is the white we had. It's not available through Majestic Calais for some reason at the moment but Majestic UK have an offer on all New Zealand wines at the moment which brings it down to £5.99 per bottle.

ohmeohmy · 09/05/2011 14:26

Morrisons had some good offers today (various £10 bottles from South Africa/Oz/France etc half price)

Taffeta · 09/05/2011 17:50

Prosecco is wonderful - look out for it on special offer. Sainsbo's had the Marca Oro one ( a really nice one ) reduced to a fiver for a good few months last year.

For a red - I really like Primitivo, its medium, soft and easy to drink - Sainsbo's TTD one is usually £6.99, but again, time it right and the reduce it.

stripeybumpsmum · 09/05/2011 20:21

slightly off topic but at our wedding we soaked the labels off the bottles and replaced them with amusing pictures/stories about our life together. Can't remember why we started it - probably because we were trying to hide the vintage - but it was a really well received.

thank you so much for all these great suggestions!
in the spirit of helping my sister i have somehow gone and ordered about 18 bottles of wine that were an unmissable bargain
will toast you all when I try them
