Asda fromage frais and fish content

DS has an allergy to fish. We stopped at an Asda on the way to the airport to get him something to eat and without thinking, I picked up one of their own brand fromage frais (strawberry flavour I think) as part of their lunchbox deal. It was only when I was sitting down that I realised fish was listed as one of the allergens contained in it.

So, what would fish be doing in a fromage frais?

Thanks.

What's on the ingredient list? I'm racking my brain for what part of a fish could be useful in fromage frais.

Does it claim to be high in Omega-5? That comes from fish, if I remember correctly

no idea, but DH once picked up a low fat version by mistake - only to get it home & realise by my reading label - it contained PORK Confused - & we don't eat meatHmm

is yours a low fat 1?? - it might be something to do with some kind of thickening agent, which the pork apparently was

The pork could be gelatin
for the setting agent rock ?

I haven't heard of fish being used for that though so I'm stumped by that one!

you're right "Skipto" - it is & fish can be used for Gelatin too & I'm wondering if its to do with fish being okay as its Halal?? - don't know for sure though

Rockinhippy - I have no idea how I completely missed your last sentence about the thickening agent!

Blush - must read posts better.

The Halal could be a possibility?

Fish can be used for gelatine, and often is in cases where pig gelatine isn't suitable/wanted en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aspic

no worries skipto I do that way to often myself :) -

Halal looks more & more likely by your link colditz

Thanks everyone. No it wasn't a low fat one, it was a child's size portion. I never knew you could get gelatine from fish! Mind you, I never knew that you needed gelatine to set fromage frais either. You live and learn!
