Am still looking for the MN angel who told me about a marvellous wine from Lidl. I can't recall the name but am stocking up for my parents' visit next month . . .

moondog · 31/10/2005 22:24

Erm...hedgedrinkers only MrsSpoon..

(How are the feet btw??)

expatinscotland · 31/10/2005 22:25

DH calls it 'F*£kfast'.

Can't say I've tried it myself.

MrsSpoon · 31/10/2005 22:36

moondog, I thought I may have seen some improvemeht with the new growth but not convinced, am still continuing with the plan.

I can't believe nobody on MN has tried Buckfast???

There's a lot of it drunk round these parts and recently I have been wondering, DH reckons it must be high quality stuff being made by the Monks and all that but I can't say I'm convinced and also not about to buy a bottle to find out.

Could you imagine the dinner parties?

I have! On a visit to they Abbey. Isn't it like a fortified tonic (can't remember too well it was ages ago)? Yukko anyway.

MrsSpoon · 31/10/2005 22:40

Yeah! Puff! Not in the same league as a nice Jacob's Creek or Wolf Blass then?

DH thought he might be missing out, he wondered if it might be a nice red?!?!?!??!

moondog · 31/10/2005 22:40

Keep with the programme MS.

Actually, thought it was some sort of tonic like Sanatogen?
I remember my grandmother buying my mother a bottle one Easter as she (grandmother) reckoned us three girls had drained her to the core lol!

MrsSpoon · 31/10/2005 22:42

LOL, did she fall in a hedge afterwards and toss the bottle, preferrably in a children's play area for the full effect?

OP posts:
puff · 31/10/2005 22:43

MrsS, it is truly foul.

MrsSpoon · 31/10/2005 22:44

LOL, I'll let DH know! Maybe he is harbouring a secret desire to be a yob|?

I think buckfast has a load of caffeine in it, hence its "tonic wine" prperties. I do believe the yoof like to drink it cos it makes them hammered and speedy all at the same time. I believe buckfast and speed is indeed a well-known cocktail among some young person subcultures.

Love,
Tech

moondog · 31/10/2005 22:45

Come to think of it,it did disappear rather promptly..

moondog · 31/10/2005 22:47

Oooh, didn't know tech actually communed with thev proles!!

How exciting! (And how do you know all this eh eh eh?)

Another thing:do you sit in a gloomy basement surrounded by whirring machines with only the flicker of an LED screen to keep you company?
How does it all work???

MrsSpoon · 31/10/2005 22:47

Awww, ta Tech, have you tried it? That clears up the great attraction to the stuff.

Young people of today.

Question still unanswered though, what happened to the vino club? Or was that just a figment of my imagination?

charliecat · 31/10/2005 22:51

Love it and often spend the weekend trawling crappy southeast offlicences for it
Spent yoof in Scotland.
Best served on wall...to later fall in hedge.

MrsSpoon · 31/10/2005 23:00

LOL Charliecat!

Is it mostly a Scottish thing?

Off Licence is probably the wrong place to look, try you local kebab house.

charliecat · 31/10/2005 23:02

I think it is a scottish thing, its the one thing that seems to unite them. They all drink buckfast and Iron Bru. One of my fav memories is of warm buckfast in a kiss...MMMMMMMMM...its like sweet runny treacle. Does the job though

MrsSpoon · 31/10/2005 23:05

bleurrrgh, Charliecat!

Irn Bru, now you're talking but it must be cold, straight from the fridge, don't think I'd want to exchange that in a kiss either!

OP posts:
charliecat · 31/10/2005 23:06

Cold from the fridge and from glass not can...oh aye

YeahBut · 01/11/2005 14:02

Buckfast (or "buckie" as it was known round our way in the north of Scotland when I were a lass) is a v. nasty but cheap way for underage kids to get completely blotto. It is made by monks! My English dh tells me that the teenage equivalent round his way was Thunderbird or Diamond White cider. Mad Dog 20/20 was a common denominator. Have to say that I've not tried any of these beverages, although did indulge in a few vodka and irn bru sessions when I first started drinking.

Adulthood has matured my tastebuds towards wine so would love to find out if the wine club is still going. Motherhood has put me on to gin.

MrsSpoon · 01/11/2005 23:34

MD 20/20 was vile. Don't know what has happened to the wine club, it had a topic all of its own (I've looked but can't see it) and we had one or two tastings but don't think it took off.

Now that's class - Buckfast and speed. How refayned Do you get an umbrella and a cherry in it?

MrsSpoon · 01/11/2005 23:56

... and a sparkler.

I was in a shop this evening (roughish area, buying wine , it was on my way home) and there were some young lads (yoofs) in front of me (late teens) and they were buying eggs, first lad two half dozen boxes, second lad, one half dozen. I'm inclined to think they were not getting supplies in for their breakie in the morning but rather planning on egging someone's house/car, only the first lad threw me as he bought 'Free Range'???
