Chicken - use by date today, but smells funny - would you chuck it?

I've got some chicken thighs in the fridge with a use by date of today, but just got them out to cook them and they smell a "little" odd. Would you not risk it and just chuck them?

if they smell weird i'd chuck em, not worth the risk imo.

I'd chuck em too. Where did you buy them from? If it was a supermarket I'd keep the label and next time I went I'd mention it hoping for a refund.

Frizbe · 25/10/2005 08:50

Yep chuck it

TracyK · 25/10/2005 08:52

chicken and mince always smell 'funny' to me after a day or so - I'm always dubious about cooking it but can't bring myself to throw out food. So I eat it and it's never made me ill. Either lucky or iron stomach.

Caligula · 25/10/2005 08:52

I'd take it back to the shop if I had time. Or chuck it.

Use by dates are only a guide, your own nose and eyes are more reliable.

SoupDragon · 25/10/2005 08:53

Chuck if they smell odd. I go by smell, not useby dates.

agree with TraceyK - chicken out of apacket always smells a bit weird - rinse it under cold water, leave it on a plate for half an hour then smell it.

I just took £20 worth of chicken breasts back to Tescos for a full refund. Two days within date and smelt vile.

Full refund - no problem

bandbsmum · 25/10/2005 08:55

Thanks everyone. I did start to cook it and the smell got worse, so definitely going to chuck it, especially as I was cooking it for my dd (11 mos) Can't really take the chicken back as they're partly cooked, but maybe if I take the packet I may get somewhere. Not sure if I can be bothered though. In future will cook chicken within a day of buying it or put in the freezer!

I bought them in Tesco's btw. So going by others experience of Tesco's maybe it's worth trying for a refund.

I have an iron stomach and nothing ever makes me sick. But funny smelling chicken, is the one thng I just can't bring myself to cook. Have taken it back to tescos, and got a full refund, twice, no quibbles, suggest you do the same.
