Peanut butter - healthy snack or killer in disguise?

My DD (3) has just discovered PB on toast and loves it. I'm wondering whether it's ok to have it every day for breakfast but DH thinks he remembers a US study which linked it to cancer.

She won't be having loads of it but is it a healthy alternative for a 3 year old? What are your thoughts?

It is a good food to include in a varied diet.

I think there are healthier kinds of peanut butter - Whole Earth with no added sugar or palm oil (very unethical too!) I haven't heard any links to cancer, people are usually worried about allergies, but I expect it could be googled. I say healthy snack and I love it, but don't buy the ordinary stuff.

Google gives some pretty mixed opinions and not much info for children. I thought it was healthy and good for you on the whole.

Will check my good shopping guide for a more ethical one than Tesco's smooth. Grin

I've always been told it is an excellent source of protein.

We also use the Whole Earth one, which you can get in Tesco and Sainsbos. It doesn't have added sugar (or salt I think...). I think it's a pretty good source of protein.

I have the Suma or Medina stuff from the health food shop (essentially just mushed up peanuts) on toast pretty much every day. DS (2.5) loves it too.

I when I say everyday, I mean for about 25 years! No obvious side effects yet.

halfcaff · 27/02/2011 21:24

Oh yes I used to get the Suma one too in enormous pots. Lovely.

You can get other 'nut butters', for want of a better phrase. Like cashew nut butter.

CrazyHorse · 27/02/2011 21:27

Well, I would say whole earth is better than Skippy, but hey, I think it depends on how much of it you eat.

I would say in moderation it is fine.

When I'm being 'bad' peanut butter and strawberry jam is my food joy.

When feeling a bit healthier but wnt to indulge I like peanut butter in the grooves on celery!
