They were fresh from Morrisons on Saturday. BB was yesterday, do you think they will be ok for tonight?

I'd just apply the usual rules - chuck any that are closed and don't open when tapped. OK is OK, the mussels no better than Morrisons if they're alive or not.

Oh, but maybe they're pre-cooked. If so, then no, I don't think I would. Despite being usually quite lax about best before dates.

HettyAmaretti · 21/02/2011 16:41

...mussels know better...

notapizzaeater · 21/02/2011 16:42

I ignore dates normally but with mussels not sure. Would they still open if OK ?

If fresh then I'd probably risk it (but mussels are my favourite food in the world!!)

HettyAmaretti · 21/02/2011 16:45

Totally the wrong way round with the usual rules, sorry, toddler distraction.

TragicallyHip · 21/02/2011 16:45

Arf at mussels know better Grin

Not pre-cooked, I don't normally go by bb dates but I know you have to be a bit careful with Seafood.

I shall cook them then!

Thanks

No!
In fact no no no no no no no no!!

I am rarely too fussed over sell-by-dates but shellfish scare me.

Eating mussels that are dead before you cook them is A Bad Idea, even if they're well within date. If they're alive then they're fine, 'tis always important to check very carefully.

witchwithallthetrimmings · 21/02/2011 16:56

so chuck those that are open before cooking
if there seems to be loads that are open my guess is that you should not cook them
and don't eat any that are closed after cooking

TragicallyHip · 21/02/2011 16:56

That's gross, how could you be happy about a black tongue?!

Ormirian have you known anyone to get ill? I am a little scared myself but it's only one day

HettyAmaretti I know about checking them but was more concerned about them being a day out if date. Do you think it will be ok?

OP posts:
HettyAmaretti · 21/02/2011 16:59

Gah. Yes, if they're alive then they're fine to eat Smile.

TragicallyHip · 21/02/2011 17:00
