Your best please-everyone hassle-free starter?

Aworryingtrend · 17/02/2011 12:43

I am bored of all my regular starters:

tartlets- tomator or goats cheese and cranbery
salads- bacon and avocado or pear and roquefort
smoked salmon- as canapes or with philadelphia marscapone
soups- have for lunch most days so dont so them as a starter

Inspire please! Also needs to be reasonably low carb ie nothing too bready, potatoey or pasta/rice as the main ingredient.

TIA!

Pate stuffed mushrooms - grill a portobello mushroom each until beginning to soften. Top with a dollop of your favourite pate, stick a blob of garlic butter on top & sprinkle with mixed herbs, then pop back under the grill for about 5 mins.

Scallops & chorizo - serve about 6-8 queen scallops per person (Asda do frozen bags for about £5 if you're on a budget). Fry thin slices of chorizo (about 4/5 slices per person) for a couple of minutes until the oils starts to come out. Remove from pan & rest. Fry scallops in same pan until done, then serve with the chorizo slices (it's nice if you drizzle the remaining chorizo flavoured oil over the scallops too).

Bacon wrapped black pudding with mustard sauce?

Proscuitto, mozzarella, orange slices or clementine slices and rocket, drizzled with balsamic. Very easy but tasty.

Reload baked piedmont peppers.
Cheaper and in the same style, fill a split red pepper with chopped toms, garlic, herbs and olive oil. Season with plenty of salt and pepper.
Bake till charring at the edges and serve warm with bread to soak up juices.
Cheap and easy.

A big wooden board with chorizo, salted almonds, cheese, a bit of bread, some olives, stuffed peppers and whatever else you fancy plonked down on the middle of the table for people to help themselves to with a bottle of wine or some sherry.

And crab/smoked mackeral pate/ smoked salmon/gravadlax with brown bread and lemon.

Ragwort · 17/02/2011 16:19

Smoked mackeral pate is dead easy - whizz up smoked mackeral with cream cheese - that's it; add lemon juice/horsradish/capers if feeling posh. Grin.
