What is Irish food???

My family is Irish but I am still coming up with a bit of a blank. School is having a St. Pat's Day celebration. Mass in the morning, then concert in the afternoon followed by food, a sort of a tea party type thing - with 'traditional Irish food' But what is that apart from drink laced porter cake or toddy cake? My mothers baking was always more continental than traditional Irish.

Any suggestions?

Laughing at not being related to Powercourt I remember hiding in the boot of a friends mums car so it wouldnt cost as much for the entrance as there was maybe 6 kids in the car and her mum. Definately get to Asda for Rock Shandy , Club Orange, Tayto think they do Barm brack. Ohh also they do the chocolate Kimberly biscuits. Definately go for the soda bread with smoked salmon or strawberry jam as a cheaper alternative and an apple tart.

I have to add I am not getting so much hungry as nostalgic here. Stuff I hadn't thought about in years.

Bubble and squeek,

okay, so it's a school thing, no guinness and forget about the crab

ham sandwiches (country childhood in ireland, many ham sandwiches), tayto crisps, lots of tea (preferably Barry's, but maybe you can't get that), and still, the apple cake.

stripeywoollenhat · 15/02/2011 13:57

i was also going to suggest red lemonade, but i'm not sure it still exists

GwendolineMaryLacey · 15/02/2011 13:58

You can get Barry's in Asda as well. Chocolate Kimberlys don't have the same appeal now that I can buy them any time, they were far better when they were imported in visiting family's suitcase :)

GwendolineMaryLacey · 15/02/2011 13:58

I had a bottle of red lemonade on my desk this minute, also from Asda

Kimberley biscuits, tayto crisps, soda bread with calvita cheese on, fruit cake, and a large mug of Barry's tea!!! Brew

all the things I stock up on when I go back to Ireland

stripeywoollenhat · 15/02/2011 14:00

i'm going to get dp to make the apple cake

gwen, i thought there were terrible rumours about the contents of red lemonade...?

AFingerofFudge · 15/02/2011 14:01

you can't get any irish produce around where I live Sad My local asda doesn't have anything. When I lived in London,I lived just down the road from a little Irish shop, I could get the Mayo News, my irish dairy milk bars (yes they do taste different to English Cadbury's!!!) and all the tayto crisps I could wish for.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 15/02/2011 14:14

Were there?

stripeywoollenhat · 15/02/2011 14:16

i'm sure it was just all talk...
