MIL is 60 next week, doesn't like anything very sweet. Will have the odd dark chocolate but complains chocolate gives her headaches. I want to bake her a birthday cake but looking for something grown-up and not overly sweet. I was thinking maybe something citrussy? Any ideas?

How's this?

I've had this recipe filed (not tried it yet)
uktv.co.uk/food/recipe/aid/606092 but it might be a bit too syrup-y.

Lemon polenta cake is also nice, texture makes it seem less sweet somehow.

Or what about something like baked cheesecake?

What about cupcakes that the kids have been involved with making? Or lemon drizzle's always a winner.

Very standard, but a good tea loaf is hard to beat, esp if you don't have a sweet tooth. Or something plain like an all butter madeira cake.

IME, citrus cakes can be very sweet.
