I tried the colmmans slow cooker mix last week, beef and tomatoes with red peppers served with rice. It was lovely and kids loved it. Im sick of casseroles and curry.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 02/02/2011 20:45

I've just done one, not sure if it was Colmans but it might have been. Sausage casserole. Sausages, cannellini beans, onions and chopped tomatoes mixed with the sachet. DH is eating it now, smells a bit spicy but he is loving it. Am also sick of bits of meat with vegetables.

fifi, how do you do your curry? I haven't tried curry yet.

fifi25 · 02/02/2011 20:52

Ive got that one in the cupboard i havent tried it yet. I just use the Maykway mild sauce or paste mix as the kids dont like spicy food. The butchers and tesco sell it. Im not very good at starting a curry from scratch. I just add chicken, mushrooms and onions. You can add peppers as well. You can get a colmans slow cooker mix. Ive got one of them here as well, I will let you know what its like.

fifi25 · 02/02/2011 20:54

If you use the Maykway make the sauce up thin as it thickens quite a bit.

darkmornings · 02/02/2011 20:54

I use pataks jars put onion and mushrooms with it and chicken. Then I use the microwave 2 min rice. Tea is ready in no time

GwendolineMaryLacey · 02/02/2011 20:55

So you can just bung in a jar of sauce with your other stuff? Have never been sure if you can.

fifi25 · 02/02/2011 21:05

The sauce i use is exactlly the same as a chinese takeaway curry. Ive never used a jar i am going to try it. Does it work for sweet and sour etc.

darkmornings · 02/02/2011 21:09

I've only really tried curry and spanish chicken and they were both fine.

olijackmum · 07/02/2011 14:02

I use Schwartz mix for chilli and it's very good in the slow cooker.

dreamingofsun · 07/02/2011 15:42

another vote for pataks paste. just mix with tin of toms and meat and veg chopped up and onion and you could add sultanans and chopped apple. maybe slosh little bit of hot water in part way through if looks bit dry. could also add couple of spoonfuls of chutney if some going spare - not nec though

stewmaker · 07/02/2011 15:46

mine currently contains a pork stew

left over roast pork
left over sage and onion gravy
veg stock
onion
cooking apple
carrots
left over peas

scrummy

Made this last friday and it was lush;
lamb
tinned tomatoes
tomato puree
onion
celery
stock
chilli
peppers

serve with couscous mixed with fried onion and top with gremolata (parsley, lemon rind and garlic)
The topping really makes it!

antony worrel thomson(sp?) has got a new slow cooking recipe book out.

might give it a whirl as im tired of meat and veg too.

dreamingofsun · 07/02/2011 15:52

has anyone tried anything from antony's new book? what was it like? His barbecue, family and weekend books are great, but there wasn't so much grabbing me in his slow cooker one which i've just got from the libary

olijackmum · 09/02/2011 18:24

have any of you done the sauage and beans of the schwartz packets if so would it be ok with baked beans instead of cannalini

dreamingofsun · 11/02/2011 11:30

oli - i quite often use a tin of baked beans instead of plain ones and it normally is fine. if you are worried you could always rinse the baked beans sauce off?
