Halloumi? what do I do with it?

Firstly I should say I adore cheese, of any sort except sheeps.
DH seldom goes shopping, a couple of evenings ago, I asked him to go to the supermarket and get a litre of milk and some fags for me.
He came back with both and olives, tara and some halloumi. I asked him why and he said it looked 'pretty'Hmm
I've got 250g of it in the fridge and no idea what to do with it. I am not sure if this is right, but the use by date is in October 2011.

I love halloumi but find it's nicer if you cover it in seasoned flour before frying it. Also great in BBQ with cherry tomatoe kebabs.

And fried halloumi with lime and caper vinaigrette is one of my all time faves. It's a Delia recipe and highly recommended... if you like halloumi that is!

'on' the BBQ, and 'tomato' obv Blush

grill the halloumi, either at home or on the bbq; meanwhile chop various herbs and lettuce leaves together (any proportions but I like including mint and coriander for zing) and add the juice of a lemon and or bit of oil; warm some pittas then assemble b slicing the pitas and inserting some halloumi and a big helping of the salad mix
really yummy and converted me to halloumi

Kreecher, yes it squeaks! In fact we just call it "squeaky cheese".

Chop into cubes, fry in olive oil, add toasted pine nuts or sesame seeds, add some spinach for long enough to wilt, a bit of lemon juice and eat with pasta/gnocchi etc.

i almost ordered some the other day when we were out - grilled.can someone tell me what it tastes like.i am not keen on goats cheese or mozarella (esp when its heated and goes all chewy.)

not at all fussy me Smile

Not sure you'd like it then sharbie - but you should try it! It's not like goat's cheese, much blander. It's delicious and I love it (did I mention that?!)

bluebump · 28/01/2011 18:29

Ooh it's my favourite cheese. I grill it and put a bit of lemon juice on it.

sharbie · 28/01/2011 18:36

thanks will give it a try then pirate - goats cheese has a horrible taste to me

mmmmmm i LOVE halloumi

i just slice it and grill it till its browned then scoff it :o

i have made halloumi kebabs before with button mushrooms, peppers and cherry tomatoes, just chop it into cubes then thread it on kebab skewers with the veg, put some kind of marinade on it (anything lemony/citrussy works well). then just grill. serve it with rice or as a starter.

yum yum i want some :o Blush

Ooh, I need to buy some halloumi tomorrow now. Plus some nice olives, flatbread and sunblush tomatoes and then have it all for supper.

I love halloumi. I buy a box of it in Costco at the start of the month then ration it out. ;)

I usually just roast vegetables and potatoes then put some on top with olive oil for the last few minutes but am going to try some of these ideas instead! Thanks. :)
