So what is it you're supposed to serve with Sausage and Mash? Is it onion gravy?

And if it is, does anyone know a good recipe? And if it isn't, what is it?

Bisto Grin

MaureenMLove · 09/01/2011 18:10

It is onion gravy, yes. Not sure how you make it though!

Personally, I think I would make up some bisto gravy (not granuals, proper powdered stuff) and add softened onions to the mix as it starts to thicken.

Alternatively, buy some Bisto Onion gravy granuals! Grin

The dinner lady book has a nice onion gravy recipe

Nigel Slater Simple suppers has a mustard and honey and lemon sauce that is also good - serve with carrot and coriander mash - yum!

NormaStanleyFletcher · 09/01/2011 18:11

cut onions, allow to burn caremelise

Add wine, lee and perrins, etc

Then add bisto (or rather tesco version) and let simmer for a bit

HerBeatitude · 09/01/2011 18:12

oh gawd you're so posh FA Grin

OTOH, all of you who are suggesting bisto, are so common. Ai don't hev it in mai condiments cebinet.

Would OXO do instead of bisto?

Oooh, I just made onion gravy. I just sliced an onion, cooked is slowly in butter until softened and slightly caramelised then added 1 tsbp flour and a pinch or two of cumin, let it cook for a couple of mins (stirring all the time) then slowly added stock (still stirring). Once stock added and gravy has thickened, let it bubble away for a few mins until you're ready to serve. Tis yummy.

Instant gravy can be tarted up very well indeed by very slowing frying strips on red onion in a little oil, perhaps adding some sliced mushrooms. Add the instant gravy (Bisto Best Beef for preference) to the pan along with a generous slug of red wine and simmer the lot together until it's a lovely, glossy, saucy gravy. Yum. Perfect with sausages, creamy mash and green veg of your choice. Mine would be tenderstem broccoli or spring greens if I'm counting pennies.

GrimmaTheNome · 09/01/2011 18:17

Or you could just serve it with tomato ketchup Grin

HerBeatitude · 09/01/2011 18:18

Oh bollocks have just gone to fridge and found I've only got half an onion left. [shit housewife emoticon]

Mustard and ketchup it is then. Grin

But thanks for all the recipes - will try some of these another time

The wine - should it be red or white?

One onion, sliced finely. Cook slowly for 20 minutes in butter. Add 1-2 tablespoons flour, stir well to coat. Add one tin Baxters Beef Consomme with Brandy. Bubble up for 5 minutes.

Tastes like gastropub onion gravy - gorgeous.

HerBeatitude · 09/01/2011 19:39

Am stocking up with posh stocks. Grin

Sainsburys used to have ready-made onion gravy - it was Taste the Diff I think, with red wine or something - anyway it was utterly delish but the bastards stopped selling it Sad

senua · 11/01/2011 20:50

Surely it's sausage and mash and baked beans?

Ponders · 11/01/2011 21:02

noooo, sausage & chips & baked beans

sausage & mash & peas (& fried onions...yum...)

HerBeX · 07/04/2011 17:39

Have just found this thread again because I once again have sausages and am still not clear if the wine should be red or white?

I definitely have onions this time

piebald · 07/04/2011 20:46

Red

piebald · 07/04/2011 20:51

And worcester sauce and a bit of mustard powdder and a pinch of sugar too

ladyofthehouseoflove · 07/04/2011 21:00

Just heat up a tin of french onion soup...ta da! Instant onion gravy Grin

tb · 13/04/2011 17:16

Sorry, it has to be sausage and bubble and squeak (left over mash and cooked white cabbage fried in sausage fat)

Bliss -

ClancyCrew · 13/04/2011 17:17
