Easy canapes/finger foods for 60th birthday party

Hi all.
I'm planning a small get together for my Mum's 60th birthday party at the end of the week and need some simple, but creative, ideas for a buffet. I'm not much of a cook Smile
Does anyone have any ideas please? I am trying to keep the cost down as much as possible. Don't want much do I? Grin
Thanks.

how many people?
what does your mum like?
any known allergies etc?
how much fridge/storage do you have?
do you have access to cooker on the day?

sorry for so many Q's but it helps us all help you!

i made a hotpot and a chilli for the bigger stuff.

you can make vol au vent filler the day before and fill and heat through 5 minutes before people come as they are nicer warm ...so are the sausage rolls.

buy a pizza and cut into small squares.

Honey baked mini sausages

Cut puff pastry into little squares. Top with cheese/ham/pepperoni/smoked salmon/cream cheese/marmite. Obviously not all at once.

  • feuilles de brick are nice but only if eaten within a couple of hours
  • breadsticks wrapped in parma ham
  • mini brownies

Skewer slices of chorizo with prawns

Crostini with a slice of cold roast meat and suitable sauce e.g. beef with horseradish or ham with mustard

Blinis with creamy/cheesey stuff and fish e.g. sour cream and salmon (small fresh herbs on top always look good!)

But really, there's 98 of them here www.bbcgoodfood.com/search.do?keywords=canapes
and you can search them by difficulty, time taken etc.

Falafels with a mint/cucumber dip

Salmon pate on melba toast (just thin salmon slices mixed with a teaspoon of horseradish, a squeeze of lemon, some chives & a tub of Philly & whizzed up)

devilled eggs (very 80s but are always the first thing to go at my parties Shock)

chicken satay skewers (easy to make a satay sauce with peanut butter)

Chicken legs are easy and popular but for canapies I always use this recipe - " delia canapes

The cases are a dawdle to make and only cost you the bread and butter. You can make them ahead then fill with a dollop of cream cheese topped by a sliver of salmon, or an olive or whatever you fancy.

Also old-fashioned sausages/pineapple on sticks go down well as do a pastry-tart type thingy (sheet of ready rolled puff pastry with goats-cheese, red onion scattered on - don't have recipe but google red onion tart on bbc good food and something will come up).

zippy539 · 03/01/2011 12:46

Here you go - I do it with goats cheese cause I don't like feta.
