I don't know but I can guarantee it will be hours if it's a proper slow cook pork recipe (I don't know the Jamie recipe)

at least 2 hours I reckon.

you want the meat to be pretty much falling away from the bone and coming apart in shreds (like the fibres are separating IYSWIM)

Is it the recipe from "Cook with Jamie" where you cook it overnight? Because the recipe is for a 5-6kg piece of pork, so just follow the recipe exactly and cook for 9-12 hours.

I'm doing the slow roasted pork recipe from the sainsburys magazine and for 5.5kg shoulder of pork it states a total cooking time of 6hrs

JemimaMop · 23/12/2010 18:30

This is the recipe that I'm thinking of.

winnybella · 23/12/2010 18:31

We usually use 2-2.5 kg and roast for 3-4 hrs so 5kg at least 5hrs I would think. Probably more.

thank you for replies...it is the jamie one so no adding wine etc

here grrr..... it has a cooking time of 5 hours - consensus maybe 6 hours should do it???

I did one a similar size for 6 hours and it wasn't good. I did a massive one in the summer for 24 hours and would always do that now. Top temp for 30 mins, then 24 hoours on 110 c. Falls apart. Doesn't matter what size of joint.

JemimaMop · 24/12/2010 07:29

I would just use the Jamie recipe that I linked to as it is for the same size joint as you have, and it is really nice.

I should stay out of this section. Haven't done slow roast pork for ages and have just had to ring DH who is at the shops and ask him to get me a 5KG joint of pork I don't really need at all...

tomhardyismydh · 24/12/2010 14:43

i would say that you cant really over cook it but would glaze it at 6 hrs and probe it or make sure juices are running clear and leave in for another 2 or 3 hrs.

DuffyMoon · 24/12/2010 16:07

Midori..... I have one you can have Xmas Grin

Cook it, it will be lovely. Grin

DH has returned with a 5KG leg of pork, (as opposed to shoulder) no bone, but I assume I can just cook it in the same way?

tb · 24/12/2010 18:33

Is it possible to cut the original one into two joints?

DuffyMoon · 24/12/2010 19:21

No - it has a big bone in the middle... I think i am going to put in oven and set timer for 5am and cross fingers. Still i dont eat meat so I will be ok Xmas Smile thank you for help
