Sous-vide cooking worth a try at home or a load of old boil in the bag

Dh has hinted at getting a Sous-vide machine for christmas.
Anyone tried them, are they worth it or should I push him in the direction of a good jeweller instead.

Oh right, I think the novelty would wear off quickly and it wouldn't be used.
