I have never made toad in the hole! What do you have with it? Potatoes or?? I'm (easily) confused

And is there any secret recipe I should know about? Smile I was thinking that with decent sausages it could be a good midweek dinner.

We usually have it with brocolli and mushroom/onion gravy. I never had it as a kid though so don't know how it is meant to served.

tinierclanger · 16/11/2010 17:17

Onion gravy, that's all you need.

BooBooGlass · 16/11/2010 17:17

Not potatoes, way too many carbs on one plate with all the batter. We used to have it with peas and gravy

Put an extra egg in the yorkie pudding mix. I do veg (broccoli is good) with mine, and depending on how much pudding there is to go round, might do mashed potato too.

dp always makes this with mashed potato.

Then he wonders why nobody ever finishes their meal.

Tis a fine meal on its own and needs nowt but a bit of graaaavy

thighsmadeofcheddar · 16/11/2010 17:20

Green beans, carrots, onion gravy. Delicious.

bintofbohemia · 16/11/2010 17:25

Oooh, I made this for the first time on Sunday (but with veggie sausages). Roasted the sausages and some red onions and thyme and put teh batter over the top, but should have used a shallower tin, I think.

I did it with steamed brocolli, peas and lashings of gravy.

BertieBotts · 16/11/2010 17:32

Any green veg goes well. I like it with mashed potato as well but it really doesn't need it.

Strawbezza · 16/11/2010 17:32

No potatoes. Gravy and braised red cabbage. Yum.

BendyBob · 16/11/2010 18:26

Thank you ALL!Smile

Aha so potatoes are ott - I sort of thought they might be overkill. And Strawbezza - thanks to you - I'm just sitting here planning Christmas day food (not featuring toad in the hole btwGrin) and and had totally forgotten about braised cabbage..you've just reminded me!Smile
