Treacle out of date - would you have used it?

Was mixing the Christmas cake this morning. DH went down to the cellar to find the treacle and wouldn't let me use it. Was best before March 1996

Fortunately I had another unopened tin lurking at the back of the cupboard. Left to myself, I would have used it.

What would you have done?

I would have opened it and tasted it after all it's a by product of sugar which lasts forever I think! it may have tasted metallic though!

I didn't use my out of date one last year as I read on the side of the tin if its kept beyond it can explode when you open it......

I've never read that on anything except fireworks!!
