Does anybody have the recipe for school dinner style chocolate shortbread?

Back in the 1980s we often used to have warm chocolate shortbread with custard, freshly made by the dinner ladies.

If they overcooked it, it was so solid that bits would shoot off across the room, but when they got it right it was the scrummiest, most perfect pudding I have ever tasted. I can still remember the taste, even now!

This is probably a longshot, but does anybody have a recipe for such a pudding? I don't know if there was a government-endorsed recipe book that all schools cooked from, but all the schools I attended (South East coast) made it at least once a week.

I'd love to be able to enjoy it again!!!

makes 25 Grin - you might want to half it!

800 gr SR Flour
400 gr Marg (although I use butter)
400 gr Caster Sugar
120 gr Cocoa Powder
2 eggs

Line and grease baking tray, Put all the dry ingredients into a bowl. Melt the Marg and pour onto the dry ingredients, add the eggs to form a dough. Spread the mixture on the tray and bake for 15-20 mins at 200 c gas mark 6

I then add cocoa to normal custard to have chocolate custard!

Thankyou so much Furball - I will have a go at cooking it this week!!

Actually I could probably snaffle my way through 25 pieces if it's as yummy as I remember, but halving it is more sensible!!

Where did you get the recipe? Do you have a 1980s school dinner recipe book?!! Grin

Oooh! I remember that! It was my favourite pudding. And yes, it did used to shoot across the room, they must have overcooked it every time!

Might have to do this recipe...

It was on my ds' school dinner leaflet.

I'm still trying to get my mitts on the chicken Fricassee recipe! - Do you remember - they served it with little triangles of toast? Twas scrummy.

Wonder whether our kids will be reminiscing about their school dinners of turkey twizzlers, smiley faces and the like before the advent of Jamie Oliver's campaign [yuck]

Can't help with the chicken fricassee I'm afraid - I had fishfingers and baked beans every day for my main course. Unadventurous!!

Did everyone have the same Halloween pudding at school? Ours was always ginger sponge with green, mint flavoured custard. Looked minging and a revolting combination of flavours!

The school where my mum taught used to make something called Chocolate Floorboards, which was like cornflake crispy cake, but much more compacted and with the secret ingredient of powdered milk, which gave it the most crack-like more-ishness you can possibly imagine. Now, if anyone had the recipe for that...?
