I've never made a shepherds pie Is it bascially just bolognaise with mash on the top in the oven for half an hour?

brown mince, then an additional 5 mins for the carrots and onion. Add water to just cover, boil then add Bisto Gravy Granules. Reduce to simmer and add the secret ingredient............ a tin of baked beans. Season with black pepper. No salt, as tons in the gravy granules.

Boil spuds, mash with butter and black pepper. Pile on top of mince, fork and grill until spuds turn brown.

tastes better if left to cool and re-heated the next day

ooh an a few chopped mushrooms as well goes down well - no toms thou (carrots at a push but DH doesn't like it inn there!)

pepsi · 04/09/2005 10:31

When everyone mentions gravy here do they mean just simply making up gravy granules with hot water or are they making it some other way. About how much liquid do you need to make plenty of gravy inside. I dont like mine dry.

Enid · 04/09/2005 11:38

fry onions and carrots until soft
add lamb mince and fry until looking a bit brown at edges
add a heaped teaspoon of flour
stir in some hot stock (I use marigold)
cook for 25 mins
put in buttered (not essential but its what I always do) dish, top with plain mash, made with lots of butter but only a scrap of milk
make fork marks in the top so it goes brown and crispy on the edges
bake in oven or under grill until golden and bubbling at the edges

definitely no tomatoes
but you can slice a tomato and put it on top of the mash before cooking if you must, it looks pretty and tastes quite nice

oh, and essential to serve it with peas

Kelly1978 · 04/09/2005 11:41

Use colmans shep pie mix, it's far tastier than makign gravy for it.

compo · 04/09/2005 11:42

that sounds yummy Enid, except for the peas - dh refuses to touch them with a barge pole!

OP posts:
Enid · 04/09/2005 11:42

you do not need a mix

a complete waste of money IMO

(sorry kelly)

Enid · 04/09/2005 11:42

well I am breaking a rule and having it with runner beans at lunchtime today as we have so many (and I have run out of peas)

have a busy week and wanted to get ahead of myself, also quite tired atm and wanted to get stuff done today with free childcare rather than slaving with kids after work

message for nemo1977
i made your FIL recipe for shepherds pie the other night.

It was GORGEOUS, it was so nice it just fell down my throat!

Me and DH ate ALL the pie-greedy pigs!

usually we eat half and freeze the rest but not with this one!
