Can we all go dumpster-diving tomorrow and report back what we found?

First of all you need to go and look in the trolleys for any discarded shopping lists. I miss those threads.

Then, nonchlantly, possibly whistling, you must saunter around the back of the supermarket. Locate the big green bins and quickly, with bags ready (bags for life of course), you must rummage around and fish out any food you spot. Stuff it into your bags and hightail it away.

If you are accosted, you must explain that you're only doing what the BBC wants you to do. Then come back home, log onto mumsnet and let us know what you found an what you're going to cook.

I shall be in charge and I shall be awarding points based on the supermarket, the produce collected, whether you actually entered the bin and how you dealt with any supermarket employees.

Good luck!

Surely someone wants to go rummaging around in massive bins tomorrow for misshapen fruit and vegetables?

I hope someone has done this today!

It makes me feel v nostalgic as my dad used to collect boxes from the local supermarkets, and coincidentally got to pick up discarded food. The absolute best day of the week was Saturday when they cleared the patisserie counter so there would be a giant bag of cream cakes - i'll never forget being able to pick through it Grin

I have decided to practise dumpster-diving later, under cover of darkness.

I think if I tried to dive in a dumpster, I would fall in.
Then the next person would have a real shock Grin

I actually saw someone do this in Richmond last week, on the green.
Not a sight you normally see.

FlorenceDaphne · 26/08/2010 17:30

Ooh, Deddei, did they net themselves anything good?

Well she had a shopping bag full- looked like other people's left over picnic stuff and food from one of the pubs.

I am going to go round my neighbours houses each day and ask them if they are throwing anything away

If I could scavenge enough each day for 3 households I could give up my job. I think scavenging would be a lot nicer than my current job tbh.

I had a look today & our local store (asda) hs ther bins behind locked gates!! how rude - they don't want all the goodies but don't want me to have them either.
We also have a lovely little resturant near by so I have decided to see if i can squeeze through the back gate to raid their bin.
shall I report back?

Katisha · 26/08/2010 23:13

Please do.

And send round any spare creme brulee.

teamWatson · 26/08/2010 23:21

Will do although I am hoping for large courgettes & squishy in some parts red peppers as they are really expensive & my little girls like to eat tons of them!!!

Oh & I don't mind small eggs, bendy cucumbers, dented milk cartons but I do mind not being able to nab them from a bin much bigger than myself at my leisure Wink

Might be a bit deep - blame it on the hour but wouldn't it be better to share the "waste" food with family's needing fruit & veg vouchers or needing to claim special types of benifits.
Or maybe volunteers driving the produce to childrens home, special needs units, churches, homeless centres?

I will get off my fairy, everything should be better bubble now & leave....
