That had to be the oddest colour soup ever.

My poor, poor family.

We have a slight cauliflower glut. dd suggested I could make soup with one tonight.
The one hiccup with that is we have planted a bright purple variety of cauliflower. When you cook it, the colour bleaches out somewhat and the water goes blue.

So I made the soup and whizzed it up with the hand blender. Quite bright bluey-purple. but thin. time was getting on so I panicked a bit and added some tomato puree to thicken it.

The soup didnt seem to change much but developed an orange layer. Still too thin. So I added cream cheese

Look at
ral4009 to see the colour it changed to. A kind of muddy lilac, with an orange tinge.

My family were very game and gave it a good go. I think for dd the final straw was the leftover cooked rice that I stirred into it in a 'waste not want not' moment.

I have a lot of soup to eat tomorrow.....

My Aunt's MIL who was German used to make amazing cauliflower soup - she used cauliflower and potato and cream and it was lovely and thick, just a tip if you make any more!

Good on them for giving it a go

All I can think of is Bridget Jones BLUE SOUP!!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/07/2010 13:19

Ali - the last thing I said to dh last night is that I've learned one very important lesson that day.
Cauliflowers should be white.

soup is on profile. pic doesnt really do the colour full justice.

I got a fab recipe from the riverford cookbook (I think) for potato, black kale and chilli soup. It is a strange purpley brown colour (I think they call it swamp soup on their taster days) but tastes fantastic however I froze some of it and when it defrosted the semi-blended kale stuck together in a greeny brown lump floating in the middle of a watery purple puddle. It looked awful . It still tasted good once it was heated and mixed together again though. Mmm, I could just eat a bowl of it now, I must go and dig out the recipe...

Here's a pic of the soup from their website -here - so you can see that even at it's best it doesn't look great, it is lovely though.

Rockbird · 28/07/2010 14:23

God almighty, just go out to the pond with a bowl and have done with it!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/07/2010 14:25

yup - that deserves the name 'swamp soup'

our swamp soup is when we have lots of green veg that we need using up. If its mixed things like wilting carrots we call it sad soup.

Dear God it reminds me of the mushroom soup a made a couple of weeks ago. I received a bucket, yes a bucket full to the brim of field mushrooms hand picked by a very generous family member and not having a freezer I had to use them up pretty quickly. So for the 1st night we had garlic mushrooms, the 2nd and 3rd night we had fried mushrooms and egg and the 4th night a mushroom omelette.

By the 5th I was running out of inspiration so deceided to whizz the remainder of the bucket up and make into a mushroom soup. It turned out BLACK and didn't look at all appetising, nothing like Heinz cream of mushroom anyway.

Tasted delicious though by then I was getting a bit tired of them and God the mess in my kitchen afterwards. It took days to get rid of all the blackness. It was stuck onto everything. needless to say we never want to see another bloody mushroom for a very long time.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/07/2010 22:27

at a bucket of mushrooms. That would be an interesting challenge!
