Can I just say again "powdered squash". That's totally vile, right?!

Hulababy · 21/08/2005 16:23

We stopped squash after letting DD have it for a while. But she was only one who'd drink it - so I stooped buying it. She has water, milk or frsh fruit juice instead now. I am lax when we are out though - she will have squash sometimes then.

We do have white bread though. Not all time - depends what I fancy when at the shops - white, brown, wholemeal, granary, seeded - whatever. Bread is a big downfall for me - I love it!

Hulababy · 21/08/2005 16:24

Oh, and I HATE brown rice - yuk! DD and Dh like it - Dh prefers ir. I just can't get on with it at all. I'd rather go without! Not tried wholemeal pasta.

hunkermunker · 21/08/2005 16:25

Seeds Of Change do a pasta that's not wholemeal and not white - it's lovely. I tend to mix wholemeal and white anyway - a whole plate of wholemeal pasta is hard work IMO

Powdered squash - do you mean Rise n Shine, hunks? I loved that stuff - reminds me of crap camping holidays....

hunkermunker · 21/08/2005 16:52

No idea, Snafu - it was always already in the cups, ready for the water to be poured. Cannot understand how anyone would view it as a treat though!

snafu · 21/08/2005 16:52

Oooh, I did, but then I had a deprived childhood

hunkermunker · 21/08/2005 16:53

LOL Snafu! Hey, did you see someone had Snafu'd WhimsicalTrifle earlier? Wasn't you was it? [hard stare]

snafu · 21/08/2005 16:54

No, where, what? Not me, guv'nor.

hunkermunker · 21/08/2005 17:09

Bugger. CAPS.

ednaferber · 21/08/2005 20:26

Is there anything wrong with diet "dilute" squash?

Why is white bread evil?

Seona1973 · 21/08/2005 20:28

white bread is a source of calcium so is not all bad. I try to avoid diet squashes as they have nasties like aspartame in them which is worse than a bit of sugar. dd has very diluted high fruit juice, pure orange juice, plain water or milk.

expatinscotland · 21/08/2005 20:30

Make my own bread in bread machine. Usually 50/50% white/wholewheat or raisin bread, which is also 50/50.

DD has cups filled with 1oz fruit juice - nothing w/artificial sweetners or additives + 8oz. water as a beverage, in addition to about a pint of milk a day.

I bake ALL our own sweets and snacks. I LOVE baking, though, as a hobby and enjoy trying out new recipes.

SoupDragon · 22/08/2005 09:13

There's nothing bad about white bread as such - there's just not a lot that's good about it.

Both DSs have had wholemeal bread right from the start and now have wholemeal granary. I never understood why people would start their child off with white bread and get them used to the bland taste. It's one of the few things we've managed to get (and keep) "right" about DSs diet. They also only get fruit juice or pure fruit smoothies. Obviously they drink squash when out and about or at peoples houses, ditto for white bread, but they don't get it at home.

OTOH, they don't eat fruit and only like 4 types of vegetable...

Am i the only one though that thinks watered down orange juice tastes foul ??

expatinscotland · 22/08/2005 09:32

You could also try watered down herbal teas - caffeine and ginseng-free. Apple juice also tastes nice watered down. Good for the teeth as well.

DH like white bread, so we compromise with 50/50 or we do a French stick/baguette. Mmmmm.

flashingnose · 22/08/2005 09:32

No, nutty, you're not . I'd rather drink half a glass undiluted than a full glass diluted tbh.

nutcracker · 22/08/2005 09:35

My brother has been having those innocent smoothie drinks and my kids love those.

My brother though has had to limit himself to one glass a day as it gave him the runs

alison222 · 22/08/2005 10:31

No nutcracker- I'm with you. Watered down orange juice is foul. I give it to the kids though
They also do get squash some of the time, water others and plenty of milk.
On the subject of bread we make it in the breadmaker and its usually 50% wholemeal/ 50% white flour but depends how I feel. At least its not full of soya flour like the stuff at the supermarkets. (DS used to be allergic to soya) hence smug mummy now makes own. - actually its dump ingredients, press button, wake up to nice fresh bread. Doesn't do much for my waistline though.
