New tank, advice needed

I have a 30l Biorb flow with some Danios. This was a second hand tank which does look lovely in our kitchen. I'd like to set up a tropical tank in our living room and was looking into another Flow. However, the reviews of Biorbs aren't great (I've had no issues with mine) so I've bought a second hand Fluval Edge 49l.
I'd like to use sand rather than gravel as I've heard this is kinder to the bottom feeder fish. How thick should this be?
I'd like to have a couple of shrimp, some tetras and guppies. Would this be possible in a tank this size?
I'm also planning on using live plants rather than plastic, are there any that I should avoid/go for?
Any other advice will be gratefully accepted. Although I've had tropical fish before (many, many years ago) I really want to make a perfect habitat for the fish, which I feel I may not have done in the past.
Thank you
