Anyone had a pet lobster? Is it humane to have one and what do you do with it?

A quick Google would suggest they're space needing mostly solitary animals.
At least 50gallon tank, they'll eat everything and anything in the tank, they fight with others and oh they can live until tgeyre 100+.
This might be just what you're after but think wisely.

No, not a pet.
A delicious tasty thing, on a plate, lightly poached with a fucktonne of butter

Crayfish are better as pets.

French poet Gérard de Nerval, 1808-1855, delighted his comrades one afternoon by parading through the Palais-Royal gardens with a lobster on a leash of blue ribbon. “He does not bark,” Nerval declared, “and he knows the secrets of the deep.”

Lobster as a pet?

No. It would be like battery farming

TheSockMonster · 21/11/2020 07:40

I genuinely thought I’d mis-read the thread title Grin

But why not I suppose. So long as you can provide the space and conditions for it to live a stress-free life and resist the urge to cook it

lljkk · 21/11/2020 07:46

crayfish if you want to go freshwater?

Lobsterquadrille2 · 21/11/2020 07:48

No, definitely not pets. They do not dance either.

marthastew · 21/11/2020 07:49

A friend of mine had a pet lobster for many years. One morning she came downstairs and found it walking around her living room!

RandomDent · 21/11/2020 07:51

Just don’t give it a hot bath.

It is real.

I do not have nor do I intend to have a lobster either as a pet or to eat. I know someone who has recently bought one from a pet shop and could hardly believe it.

A marine lobster - no.

Plenty of freshwater shrimp or a crayfish (of which only one type is legal in the UK for the aquarium trade) as pet options though. I've had Amano Shrimp (currently have just the two), Rili Cherry Shrimp, Orange Cherry Shrimp and Crystal Red Shrimp in the past.

Cherry Shrimp are a good "starter" shrimp but they do need a decent set up, at least 30 litres or more, that's been fully cycled and they do love some live plants too. They are teeny tiny, will breed and are nice and colourful - don't mix up the different colour types together though as resulting babies are likely to revert to wild duller colours.
