Replacing betta

I have an aquaponics tank which I got in Feb. Bought a betta and cycled the water with him in the tank. He was fine for three months, stopped eating a couple of days ago and died this morning.

Temp and water quality are fine, I have no idea what killed him.

I'd love to get another but don't know what I need to do to the tank first. Do I need to clear everything out and start again or can I put a new fish in? If the former can I rinse out the plants or do I need to buy fresh?

Many thanks for any and all advice

You answered your own question:

You don’t cycle with fish!
It’s cruel and likely to kill them.
