Possible tankmates for Siamese fighter?

Hi. First time on Fishnet Smile. Buying a tropical fish for my 8 year old daughter, who has always had a keen interest in fish. Went to an independent aquatic store yesterday to buy the tank (which came with a light, filter, heater, etc). It's a cracker!
I plan on getting it all set up today, ready for its new arrivals in a few weeks time.
I have decided on a (male) Siamese fighter fish, as they're beautiful and intelligent. I have done a fair bit of research on the fish, and know that they can be aggressive and territorial. Goes without saying that it shouldn't be kept with another betta.
Now, at the indie place, the guy told me it would be fine kept with some neon tetras. The guy at another place said that this wasn't correct, that neons are fin nippers and their bright streak might annoy the fighter. I'd rather have a bit of variety in the tank, but obviously a stressed and unhappy centrepiece fish is the last thing I'd want.
Any suggestions? What about some rasboras, or one of the duller types of tetra? Something peaceful, not too active, and known not to nip fins?
Many thanks for your thoughts.

I've kept Bettas before and never had an issue with Neon Tetras in with them. Guppies have been okay too...a nice colourful male with three or four females to keep him...erm....happy.

Some of the tetras can indeed be a bit nippy but I've not known neons to be that way except with each other.

We used to have a fighting fish he had to live alone, nothing survived being put in with him. There is a reason they keep them alone in the pet store.

Guppies and fighters can be temperamental as guppies are so colourful, it's one of those risks that may not work out. Neons are fine, if your after something different I keep my male fighter with two African dwarf frogs (super cute) not to be confused with African clawed frogs. Do your research if you want them, you won't want to mix them up! And a few shrimp too, as long as they are big enough to keep with frogs.
