Our beloved Albino Rainbow Shark died today

Title says it all. We've been away all week on holiday in Cornwall, and NDN who's 18 has been popping in to feed the fish. We are about an hour from home and got a message to say she found him and our Mollie floating this morning. The Mollie wasn't looking in greatest health before we went, he's outlived the other 3 we had by a long shot. No obvious signs of disease so we assumed he was just old (we've had him a few years).

But Rainbow shark Sad We've had him since we first started keeping fish, about 3 years now. He's a big boy and both me and DP are gutted. I'm sure you all understand that some of these fish really are part of the family.

NDN is gutted though. We did warn her about Mollie and the fact it may give up, but also mentioned in a jokey way that as long as she didn't kill rainbow we didn't mind. Fuck. Poor kid.

Have you tested the water for ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate? Seems a little premature for it to die after three years (assuming it was a year old when you purchased it).

Sorry for your loss.

I think OP had another thread yesterday in AIBU, asking if she should tell her NDN that she'd killed the fish by overfeeding. I'm guessing there isn't two MNers with a beloved Albino Rainbow Shark!

Looking after fish can be difficult, if you don't have your own. She probably thought it was better to overfeed, and be sure that they all had enough food, rather than underfeed and potentially starve some to death. Most people seem to think overfed fish just get a little fat, rather than thinking it's fatal.

I am sorry for your loss too.

In which case, 100% water change needed if there are survivors left.
